I am fortunate enough to have grown up in Apple country in Virginia. In fact, there are still patches of abandoned apple orchards on the shoulders of on and off ramps of highways in my hometown.
I’ve always thought it was such a shame that people go hungry while fruit is readily produced with little to no human interaction. Not that you would want to eat something from the side of a highway…but that’s another story for another day.
Nutritional Benefits of Apples
Don’t shoot me…but “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”…maybe be truer than you’d think!
On the surface, there’s nothing very impressive about apples. One medium sized apple has about 95 calories, 0 grams of fat, 1 gram protein, 25g of carbs, 19g sugar and 3 grams of fiber.
However, a food is more than it’s macronutrients. Carbs, sugars, protein, etc are all very important if you’re tracking your macros through a specific diet, but it’s the smaller, un-noted constituents that really impact your personal health.
Apples are a rich source of quercetin and pectin. Querectin is a flavanoid which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Pectin is a natural fiber which helps lower LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. It is also fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon and creates short chain fatty acids that may play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases, including certain cancers and bowel disorders.
In addition to these two identified constituents, there are also a number of constituents, both identified and not, that add to apple’s health benefits.
Remember that modern science has not isolated and identified ALL of the constituents in our food. And even if they had, isolating them does not give credit to the benefits that different constituents create when they work in combination.
