I love reading historic books – especially historic cookbook, housekeeping books or canning books.
Before the 1940’s supermarkets didn’t exist. Laundry machines were a novelty and many of the modern conveniences we take for granted simply hadn’t been invented yet.
How did the women of the late 1800’s – early 1900’s preserve their food? Supermarkets weren’t common until the 1950’s. Most everyone fed their families from their gardens and barns.
Which meant having a harvest season, and preserving food for the Winter and Spring.
These old-timey books on home canning can give us a look back in time. From these old books we can glean pieces of wisdom, simple recipes, and a quality of life that is missing in our day of modern conveniences.
If you’re just getting started canning, I have some awesome resources for you:
Or if you’re more of a visual learner, check out my friend Melissa K Norris’s complete Home Canning Course. She goes into great detail on the step-by-step process, safety precautions, and gives you even more recipes!
